The author describes AEAZs role in sensitising rural voters, so often marginalised and voiceless, with a series of civic awareness campaigns organised throughout Zambia in the run-up to elections in November 1996. The campaigns made clear the roles of MPs and their accountability to the electorate, as well as the notions of participation, self-determination, and democracy in a newly pluralist political system, for example. Difficulties with language and funding were encountered, but the campaigns were successful, as the Elections saw a rise in the number of voters, and subsequent questioning and holding to account of elected representatives.
