Land-use options for rural development
Focusing on the land-use issues pertaining to the 'cultivable' and 'non-cultivable' categories of land contrast to the third category of 'cultivated') in developing countries, an examination is presented of the technological criteria that have been used to determine land types and qualities. It is argued that deciding how much land should be used for what specific purpose, and by whom, is not a simple prerogative of land-use professionals, but is a political decision. Issues discussed are: land classification and availability; current land-use policies and related consequences; and prospects for integrated land-use planning.
