The DIP Project
Journal launch
The journal Development in Practice (DIP) was launched by Oxfam GB in 1991 and is published by Routledge, part of the Taylor & Francis Group. Deborah Eade was appointed Editor-in-Chief later that year. In response to its growing success in attracting high-quality contributions, Development in Practice has gradually expanded to eight issues a year, one of which is a themed double issue produced in collaboration with a Guest Editor. We went online in 1995, and established a multilingual website in 2000.
Books
In 1996, in order to make articles published in the journal accessible to a wider audience we launched the book series Development in Practice Readers. These include both anthologies and books based on special issues, all of them on a particular theme. We now have over 20 titles in print, six of which are also published in Spanish. Most of the books are freely available in PDF format on this website, and can be purchased from the Shop.
Translation
We have always accepted contributions in French, Portuguese, and Spanish as well as English. We encourage organisations to translate articles into these or other languages, on condition that we are sent a copy and that the original source is acknowledged for citation purposes.
CD RoMs
We know that Internet access is problematic and/or prohibitively expensive in many countries and in collaboration with ELDIS, based at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, are developing CD-ROM packages to address this. ELDIS already hosts a Development in Practice Group, which allows users to read and participate in discussions on articles published in the journal.
Free access
We also invite visitors from low- and middle-income countries to take advantage of our Special Rate subscriptions, as well as the various means to acquire access to published articles free of charge.
Acknowledgements
We have enjoyed Oxfam GB’s financial and moral support for almost 20 years. We also gratefully acknowledge the generosity of Oxfam America, Oxfam Australia, Oxfam Hong Kong, and Oxfam Novib, without whose funding we could not have developed this multilingual website. Intermón-Oxfam, Oxfam Canada, and Oxfam Ireland have also offered assistance.
