This is the second free downloadable guide developed by the Barefoot Collective – a group of 18 development practitioners based in 10 countries. Barefoot Guide 2 follows closely in the footsteps of its predecessor. It was written by the group as a collective effort ‘during three intensive, participatory writing workshops’. While the writing styles vary significantly between chapters, this diversity adds to, rather than detracts from, the overall readability of the book. Barefoot Guide 2 is also very interactive and visual. Every page includes memorable illustrations (by the excellent Meg Jordi), pull quotes, stories, questions for the reader, case studies and text boxes summarising key points. With all these elements, the pages could easily have become fragmented and distracting, but thanks to careful layout design the overall effect is vibrant and stimulating.
